Starship Dance Theater - a Vibrant Force in the Shoreline Community

For more than four decades, Starship Dance Theater has been a vibrant force in the cultural life of the shoreline community. Founded in 1983 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the organization began with an informal studio production of Cats—a fitting starting point that comes full circle as Cats returns to Broadway this year, featuring Starship alumna, and Shoreline Arts Alliance dance scholarship winner,  Chelsey Arce as assistant choreographer—a testament to the company’s enduring impact.

At its heart, Starship Dance Theater is driven by a commitment to creating high-quality dance that is accessible to all. Through thoughtfully designed outreach programs, the company introduces young audiences to the richness of the performing arts while nurturing curiosity across disciplines. Last spring’s production of Paintings in the Museum, wove together art, music, dance, and art history. When performed at Guilford Lakes School, the piece sparked enthusiastic participation, with students eagerly diving into post-performance Q&A sessions—clear evidence of the program’s educational resonance.

Equally beloved is The Magic Toyshop, a charming ballet that has been performed for the Guilford community since 1993. With its nostalgic portrayal of a bygone era—when handcrafted toys seemed to spring to life after hours—the production continues to delight audiences of all ages, blending whimsy with technical artistry.

Starship Dance Theater also embraces opportunities to bring dance into shared public spaces. As part of a free production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream presented by Shoreline Arts Alliance on the Guilford Green, Starship dancers added dance and movement to the evening.

Collaboration remains central to Starship’s mission. Over the years, the company has partnered with other organizations such as the Guilford Art League, The Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, The Guilford Community Center, and embraced local traditions like the Guilford Fair. These collaborations not only expand audiences but also strengthen the cultural fabric of the region.

For art supporters, Starship Dance Theater represents more than a performing company—it is a community anchor, an educational resource, and a launching pad for future artists. As it continues to evolve, its mission remains clear: to inspire, educate, and connect through the transformative power of dance.
