Deep from the Soul: Musical Celebration of Black History Month





New Haven Chorale invites you to:


a special offering of two free Zoom lectures led by Dr. Edward Bolkovac, Artistic Director of the New Haven Chorale. These engaging evening sessions will explore the richness, beauty, and lasting influence of African American musical traditions.


Session 1 — January 22

African American Singing Traditions: Their Origins and Aesthetics

Dr Horace Clarence Boyer was a renowned expert on Gospel Music as well as on the aesthetics of African American singing. This lecture will be based on his thoughts and writings.  Topics include:

  • The admired vocal quality of African American singing

  • The use of call and response

  • Pentatony (a 5-note scale) and its importance in gospel music

  • Improvisation

  • Movement and body rhythms

A wide range of recordings will be used to illustrate the traditions and aesthetics of African and African American music making.


Session 2 — January 29

African American Musical Traditions and Their Impact on American Musical Culture

This lecture will cover the depth and breadth of African American influence on American musical culture, including:

  • Jazz

  • Pop music

  • Rock-n-roll

  • Spirituals

  • Rap

  • Classical music

A wide array of performers will be highlighted!

The New Haven Chorale is thrilled to welcome back gospel singing sensation Rev. Jeremiah Paul, along with his talented family and friends, for an inspirational concert experience in honor of Black History Month. We’re also excited to welcome back the dynamic gospel group, New Praize. The program will feature powerful spirituals by William Dawson, Moses Hogan, and Stacey Gibbs, as well as uplifting gospel selections by Richard Smallwood, Rollo Dilworth, André Thomas, Maverick City Music, and the William Chester Mass Choir. Our audience will be invited to join us in singing several selections, so bring your family and friends for an unforgettable and inspirational experience!


This concert will be preceded by a FREE LECTURE on the importance and influence of African-American music on our culture.
