Come From Away Now Thrilling Audiences At Ivoryton Playhouse

The Tony-Award Winning Musical Brings the True Story of Humor, Humanity, and Hope to the Shoreline Until September 6th

Come From Away is now playing at Ivoryton Playhouse, bringing audiences to their feet with its exhilarating music, irresistible humor, and deeply moving true story. The Tony Award-winning musical continues performances through Sunday, September 6 at the historic Ivoryton Playhouse.

With book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away tells the remarkable story of nearly 7,000 airline passengers whose planes were diverted to Newfoundland following the September 11, 2001, attacks. For five extraordinary days, the people of Gander and the surrounding communities opened their homes, schools, kitchens, and lives to thousands of strangers suddenly stranded far from home.

What unfolds is not a story centered on tragedy, but on what happened next: ordinary people choosing generosity, humor, patience, and compassion in an extraordinary moment.

“From the first rehearsal, we knew there was something special about bringing this story to our stage,” said Ben Hope, Executive Producer at Ivoryton Playhouse. “Now, we’re finally getting to see our audience laugh, be moved, and by the end you can feel the room recognizing something deeply human in these people and their story. It is exactly the kind of shared experience that makes live theatre so powerful.”

Moving at a breathtaking pace, twelve actors portray dozens of Newfoundlanders and stranded travelers whose lives unexpectedly intersect. The score draws on the musical traditions of Newfoundland, propelling the story forward with fiddle, guitar, percussion, and an infectious energy that gives the production the spirit of both a theatrical event and a celebration.

At its center, however, Come From Away remains a story about people: the people who needed help, the people who offered it, and the unexpected relationships formed when the world seemed suddenly uncertain.

As Ivoryton Playhouse’s 2026 season explores a broad spectrum of American stories and experiences, Come From Away offers a moving look at a moment indelibly connected to American history while turning its attention toward the remarkable response of a small Canadian community. Twenty-five years after the events that inspired it, its message of connection, generosity, and our responsibility to one another feels as immediate as ever.

The understudy company includes John Baker*, Samantha Bass, Victoria Bundonis*, Bridget Carrow*, Ben Clouse, Martinez Napoleon*, Elio Perez, and Rebecca Tobin.

The production is directed by Todd L. Underwood, with Music Direction by Angelyn Benson.
