The Music Makers (Op. 69) By Sir Edward Elgar

Cappella Cantorum Masterworks Chorus is excited to announce it will perform Sir Edward Elgar’s full-bodied work The Music Makers (Op. 69) with a 30-piece professional orchestra and featured soloist Emily Geller for its 2023 Spring Concert on April 30th.

In this work, Elgar set to music the poem “Ode”, by English poet Arthur O’Shaughnessy, which idealizes artists as prophets who are not only predictors and seers but are shapers of human history. This insightful and passionate piece portrays artists, although often solitary, as “the movers and shakers of the world”.

Cappella invites music lovers to experience this unique and intense masterpiece as well as classics by Brahms and Handel on Sunday, April 30th at 3 PM in the John Winthrop Middle School Auditorium, 1 Winthrop Road in Deep River, CT.

Cappella Cantorum, the premiere non-auditioned community choral group of the Connecticut Shoreline and Lower CT River Valley, was founded in 1970. Over the past 53 years, the chorus has performed in 27 countries, including multiple appearances at Carnegie Hall. The group’s primary purpose is to give singers of all ages the opportunity to learn, perform, share, and enjoy great choral music while delighting audiences.

In addition to twice yearly concerts, Cappella Cantorum promotes music education and appreciation through summer singing programs, vocal training workshops, the “Annual Messiah Sing or Listen” at The Kate, and other musical events open to the public. Simon Holt (Artistic Director of Salt Marsh Opera and Music Director of First Congregational Church of Old Lyme) directs the chorus and its professional soloists and orchestra.
