NEW HAVEN BALLET ANNOUNCES AUDITION FOR THE NUTCRACKER

NEW HAVEN, CT, August 19, 2024 – New Haven Ballet will hold auditions for classically trained child ballet dancers to perform in this season’s production of The Nutcracker. To be eligible, dancers must be four or older by the audition date, attend rehearsals, and be enrolled in Creative Ballet 1 or higher at New Haven Ballet. Every student who auditions will be cast in a role and offered one or more performances December 13-15, 2024, at the Shubert Theatre New Haven.

Children in the cast rehearse weekly in October and November in New Haven Ballet’s main studio at 70 Audubon Street in downtown New Haven. The Nutcracker will perform under the bright lights of the Shubert Theatre in New Haven and feature guest stars Sara Adams and Harrison Coll from New York City Ballet.

Dancers must register for the audition, and advanced-level dancers must bring pointe shoes.

Younger dancers will be assessed on their technique and skill level. More advanced dancers will be assessed via a technical ballet class, where students work on barre exercises, center practice, and combinations en diagonal.

Artistic Director Lisa Kim Sanborn states, “Performing in The Nutcracker is one of the best

childhood memories most dancers recall for a lifetime. We are especially fortunate because NewHaven Ballet has an amazing faculty who work with the children each week in rehearsals, and the Shubert Theatre is a spectacular performing venue. Once the dancers are on stage in costume and the music begins, everyone in the theater is transported by the magic of the holidays and performance.”

AUDITION REGISTRATION

Students who wish to audition may register online or return a registration form and participation fee ($240 for Pre-Ballet through Level 8. $140 for students in Creative Ballet 1 & Creative Ballet 2) to NHB’s main office: 70 Audubon Street, New Haven no later than September 13, 2024.
