New Voices in Children's Literature:
12th Annual Tassy Walden Awards

A Call to Unpublished Writers and Illustrators
of Children's Books

Are you an unpublished writer or illustrator of children's books? Have you dreamed of a chance to have your writing or portfolios reviewed by a literary agent or book publisher?

The Shoreline Arts Alliance is presenting the twelfth annual New Voices in Children's Literature: Tassy Walden Awards competition. This contest affords unpublished authors and illustrators of children's books the opportunity to have manuscripts and portfolios reviewed by literary agents and possibly by editors and art directors at some of the major publishing houses for children's literature.

The New Voices in Children's Literature: Tassy Walden Awards is a Connecticut statewide, juried competition opened to writers and illustrators who are not published or under contract for publication. Categories are: Picture Book (text only), Illustrated Picture Book (author and illustrator must be same person), Illustrator's Portfolio, Middle Grade Novel and Young Adult/Teen Novel. All submitted works that meet the contest guidelines will be sent to literary agents for the first tier of judging. Works deemed outstanding will then be sent on to publishers and editors at major publishing houses for children's literature. All submissions for this year's contest must be postmarked by February 3, 2012.

February 3    6-8pm Opening Reception
36th Annual Juried Student Exhibition
Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts

LACFA Morgan_painting.jpg36th Annual Juried Student Exhibition Opens

at Lyme Academy College

Opening Reception to be held Friday, Feb. 3

An exhibition of artwork by students at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts opens at the Chauncey Stillman Gallery on Friday, Feb. 3, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.  Both the reception and entry to the exhibition are free and open to the public - all are welcome.

This juried exhibition showcases the best current work done by students in all of the College's major programs, including the first-year Foundation program.  The judges are the chairs of the Foundation and four studio departments.

Sally Seaman, Interim Dean of Academic Affairs at the College, anticipates some 90 works will be selected for inclusion into the exhibition out of an entry pool of at least 160 pieces.  Merit Award winners will then be chosen from the selected works.

Seaman comments, "It's an exciting show that demonstrates examples of student work from all four years of study at the school and it's fascinating to see the progression of skill and creativity from year to year."

College President Debra Petke adds, "We have an exceptionally talented student body that is moving through a rigorous program of study. This show is a wonderful opportunity to see both the curriculum made visible, and how the students' talent is cultivated throughout their four years here."

The majority of works in the show will be for sale.  Seaman notes, "This exhibition is typically eagerly anticipated by the community not only for its content but also for its purchasing opportunities."

The exhibition runs from its opening on Feb. 3 through Saturday, March 31, in the College's Chauncey Stillman Gallery.  Entry to the exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The College gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Outthink and Smith Insurance, Inc., for this exhibition.

For more information about the exhibition or Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, contact Olwen Logan, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, at 860-434-3571, ext. 135 or ologan@lymeacademy.edu

HAYDN TO HIP HOP
A concert for children and their families

From waltz to watusi, charleston to cha cha and lindy hop to hip hop members of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) and teaching artist Brian Gillie explore the relationships between music and dance in From Haydn to Hip Hop, Saturday, February 11, 2:00pm at the Omni New Haven Hotel and Sunday, February 12, 2:00pm at Shelton Intermediate School, part of the NHSO's Family Concert Series.

Be sure to bring your dancing shoes as a trio of musicians performs this kid-friendly 50-minute program featuring Haydn's Trumpet Concerto, Glenn Miller's In the Mood, Michael Jackson's Thriller and everything in between. Brian Gillie shares authentic dance moves and teaches children to improvise steps and perform choreographed routines. He'll also explore the many facets of culture and music that have influenced the way people have "cut a rug" over the past three hundred years.

Prior to the concert, visit our Instrument Discovery Zone at 1:30pm. Musicians help kids touch, toot, and tap a tune on orchestral instruments.

Tickets ($15/adult, $12/senior citizen, $5/child) can be purchased at 203.865.0831, x10 or www.NewHavenSymphony.org.

Bank of America supports the NHSO's Family Concert Series. From Haydn to Hip Hop is also generously supported by the George A. and Grace L. Long Foundation, Tweed New Haven Regional Airport, and the Omni New Haven Hotel.

Jazz NightOut 2012 February 18, 7:30pm
at the Ivoryton Playhouse

"Allen is a talented trumpeter who offers a blend of chops, intuition and the beauty of brashness." The Village Voice

The Arts Center Killingworth presents the annual Jazz NightOut with headliner and New York master trumpeter Eddie Allen and his Quartet.  Allen, whoJazzTimes magazine says "displays wit, charm, and true soul amidst bristling themes," has performed as a leader on multiple jazz recordings and played with musical greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Etta Jones, Benny Carter and Joe Henderson.  The Quartet will perform a variety of works including jazz standards and bossa nova pieces such as Ray Noble's Cherokee, Juan Tizol's Caravan, Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz and Joe Henderson's Recorda Me.

ACK Alma Macbride.jpgJazz NightOut, held at the historic Ivoryton Playhouse, is presented in a cafe-style environment with appetizers, wine bar and dessert buffet.  The evening concert opens with Connecticut musical prodigy Alma Macbride & Trio.  Macbride, a jazz pianist and flautist who displays "stunning maturity and poise at the keyboard," is a winner of the first Jazz at Lincoln Center Mary Lou Williams Competition.  She has received scholarships for the Stanford Jazz Residency, Skidmore JazzWorkshop and Grammy Camp in Los Angeles.  In addition, she appeared with jazz legend Wynton Marsalis as a member of the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra, a group of talented young musicians who rehearse and perform at different NYC jazz clubs each week.

Mr. Allen, who in addition to performing and recording, has appeared in the orchestras of Broadway hits such as Ain't Misbehavin', Black & Blue, Side Show, Jelly's Last Jam, Five Guys Named Mo' and Rollin' On the T.O.B.A.  For Jazz NightOut, he brings award-winning pianist Donald Vega who released his first album Tomorrows in 2008; acoustic bass player Nat Reeves, who in addition to appearing at jazz festivals around the world, teaches at The Hartt School, University of Hartford; and Mr. Allen's own brother (and previous Jazz NightOut headliner), drumming great Carl Allen.

Performing with Ms. Macbride is the talented drummer and composer (and brother) Jimmy Macbride, a student at Juilliard who participated in the 2009 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program at the Kennedy Center and was twice selected as a member of the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Jazz Orchestra; and acoustic bass player Matt Dwonszyk who performs with Ed Fast's Latin jazz ensemble, Conga Bop, and currently attends The Hartt School of Music.

Jazz NightOut is an annual sellout - early reservations are recommended! Orchestra café seating with appetizers: $35 for Adults, $25 for Students and $12 for Children 10 and under.  Mezzanine row seating: $25 for Adults, $20 Students; $12 for Children 10 and under.  Appetizers in orchestra Only.  Free dessert buffet and cash wine bar available for all. For tickets call (860) 663-5593 or purchase online at www.artscenterkillingworth.org.  Credit cards accepted.  Tickets are held at the Playhouse box office (103 Main Street, Ivoryton, CT) for pickup the evening of the performance.

Hailed by Boston Globe as "... vivid, compelling and first rate," the Boston Chamber Music Society, BCMS, is New England's preeminent chamber music society, providing audiences with exceptional, impassioned performances of music from the Baroque era to the present day. Founded in 1982, BCMS is an ensemble of superb musicians who come together in different combinations to perform chamber music, expanding the artistic possibilities and allowing individual expression without one personality dominating. The effect is one of the miracles of music - sheer aesthetic beauty. For this concert, our "miracle" showcases violinist Harumi Rhodes, violist Marcus Thompson, cellist Ronald Thomas and pianist Mihae Lee - our artistic director - performing a Mozart duo, a Shostakovich trio and a Brahms quartet.

All concerts are held on Sundays at 3:00 p.m. at Valley Regional High School located at 256 Kelsey Hill Road, Deep River, CT.

Individual ticket prices for each concert are $30 for Adults; $25 for Senior Citizens; $12 for Children/Students.

Partnership Announced with
Discount Power, Inc.
New Haven Symphony Orchestra

NHSO Woman with light bulb.jpgNEW HAVEN SYMPHONY LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP WITH DISCOUNT POWER, INC.,

Support the NHSO while Saving on Electricity

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) announces a strategic partnership with Discount Power, Inc., a leading supplier of low-cost electricity in Connecticut. The launch of this joint program generates on-going donations for the NHSO while saving music lovers up to 10% on the cost of their electricity.

When donors enroll through the NHSO's specialty website www.nhsopower.com they will save on electricity and a portion of each kilowatt hour bought will be donated to the NHSO. Participants in the program enjoy the same savings as all Discount Power customers, which offers lower generation rates than other major energy providers.

"This energizing new idea will generate ongoing revenue to support NHSO concerts and education programs," said NHSO Executive Director Elaine C. Carroll. "When our supporters invest five minutes in completing the paperwork they can earn vital funds to further our mission for years to come. We are so grateful to Discount Power for offering this benefit to our community."

"In partnership with the NHSO, we are pleased to offer volunteers and supporters savings on their electricity," said Kristilee LaHaye, Broker Manager of Discount Power. "More importantly, we are excited by the opportunity to generate a stream of ongoing donations to an organization as extraordinary as the NHSO. Every kilowatt we supply to the participants in this program will generate a significant donation to the NHSO."

Enrollment in the program is easy, and completely risk free. There are no fees and electricity continues to be delivered and serviced by the utilities, CL&P or UI. There is no change in monthly billing or in service except for the lower cost of electricity. In order to enroll, visit www.nhsopower.com. Once enrolled, members typically see savings within 45 days of their last meter read date.

About the New Haven Symphony Orchestra

THE GREAT AMERICAN MOUSICAL

A New Musical Directed by Julie Andrews

AT THE NORMA TERRIS THEATRE THIS FALL

This afternoon at Goodspeed's 7th Annual Festival of New Artists, the two-time Tony Award-winning theatre announced plans for the production of a new musical, The Great American Mousical,  to be directed by Julie Andrews. The musical is based on the best-selling book authored by Ms.Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, with illustrations by Tony Walton. This developmental production will run November 8 - December 2, 2012 at The Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, Connecticut. Season ticketswill be available beginning January 16 through the Goodspeed Opera House Box Office. The Great American Mousical will be sponsored by Essex Meadows.

Below the bright lights of Broadway, in the depths of the historic Sovereign Theatre, a troupe of musical-making mice rehearse a new show.  When the theatre is threatened by demolition and their diva Adelaide disappears, it will take all paws on deck to fulfill the time-honored tradition: the show must go on! Filled with singing, dancing, and show biz lore, The Great American Mousical is a tribute to life in the theatre and celebrates the two most glorious words in the English language: musical comedy!

Laura Adam appointed NHSO's Education Director
New Haven Symphony Orchestra

NHSO Banner 2011 Pops.jpgLAURA ADAM APPOINTED NHSO'S EDUCATION DIRECTOR

The Board of Directors of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) is pleased to announce that Laura Adam has joined the Orchestra as its new Education Director.

As Education Director, Laura will be responsible for the creation, implementation and management of a broad range of educational and community engagement programs. She will work closely with the New Haven community recruiting Youth Orchestra members, gathering input for in-school programs, and managing the annual Young People's Concerts.

"We are delighted to be welcome Laura as Director of our education programs," said Education Committee Chair, Gordon Ambach. "She comes with an excellent background in music education and outstanding leadership experience. We look forward to Laura's leadership in realizing our objectives for increased student appreciation of their American musical heritage and expanded opportunities to hear and play orchestral music."

Laura, formerly Education and Outreach Director for the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, was born and raised in the thumb of Michigan before attending the Interlochen Arts Academy as a voice major. She holds a B.A. in Music (Voice) from the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music. After graduation, she spent an interim year at the Cathedral Choir School of Metropolitan Detroit as Marketing and Development Associate, Assistant Conductor, Vocal Coach, and Soprano Section Leader.  Laura spent 2008-11 with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra overseeing education programs in area schools and developing a community concert series across Southeastern Michigan, serving an annual audience of over 35,000. She now lives in Wooster Square with her husband and they maintain an active performance schedule as church musicians.

"I look forward to collaborating with the musicians, board, and staff to deepen and strengthen the educational work of the NHSO," said Laura. "I am eager to meet those involved in other arts organizations and to meet each music teacher in the New Haven Public Schools, and the surrounding communities, to hear about their programs, successes, needs, and hopes for their programs and their relationship with their NHSO."

Teachers, arts administrators, and parents are encouraged to contact Laura with questions about or suggestions for the NHSO's education programs at 203.865.0831, ext. 13 or ladam@NewHavenSymphony.org

Shakespeare's classic masterpiece gets a powerful and imaginative new look. Set in 1969, Macbeth and his best friend Banquo return home from war to discover that their world has changed. Recovering from their wounds, they find themselves wrestling with the aftermath of what they've seen and done. Their three attending nurses (recast from Shakespeare's soothsaying witches) become a part of the hallucination and enact this vivid retelling of one of the greatest theatrical works in the English language.
