Haiti Earthquake Relief

Among the many fine organizations committed to relief for Haiti,  Jazz'd 4 Life has a long time partnership with BEMHaiti (bemhaiti.org) I know these people will get direct help to those who come to them from Port-au-Prince. There will be an influx of people coming to live outside of P-a-P because it will take months even years for that city to recover. There is an infrastructure of support and care already in place through the BEM Network.

We have food donation stations setup in Wallingford (non-perishables,nonliquids, rice , beans and things that don't need to be cooked or need water, like granola bars, protein bars, etc)

The governor is working on getting a large shipping container for BEM Haiti to ship once foods have been collected..

If people are interested in a drop-off address , it's Maplewood Storage Unit, 929 North Main St Extension (the road behind the movie theater) in Wallingford.

Thanks for your help. It feels good to do a little something when you see all this crazy suffering. Pray for the Peace to be maintained there.

We thank you for your concern, and your prayers, and will keep you updated.

Many Blessings,

Arne and Catherine Yaghsizian

PS~ If you would like to donate to Jazzed 4 Life, we will make sure your money gets to Haiti (www.jazzed4life.org)

FIDDLE FADDLE

FIDDLE FADDLE

NHSO Fiddle FaddleIs it a violin or a fiddle? Join members of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) and special guest artists, Moonshine Holler for Fiddle Faddle, Saturday, January 30, 2010, 2:00pm at the Omni Hotel Ballroom, New Haven, part of the NHSO's ongoing Family Concert Series. Pre-concert activities begin at 1:30pm with an Instrument Discovery Zone, offering children an opportunity to meet the musicians and try a few instruments.

Fiddling and singing duo, Paula Bradley and Bill Dillof of Moonshine Holler will take you on a journey of American fiddling traditions both old and new, accompanied by NHSO bassist Jim Andrews. Children will sing, dance, and clap their way through this fun-filled experience. As the program nears its close, we will meet the modern violin, leading lady of the 21st century symphony orchestra, and hear the astounding beauty of this magnificent instrument, as played by NHSO Assistant Concertmaster Artemis Simerson

Paula Bradley and Bill Dillof (Moonshine Holler) perform old-time music of the southern mountains on fiddle, banjo, guitar, harmonica, Hawaiian guitar and banjo ukulele, with harmony singing and flatfoot clod dancing! Combining their talents and performing experience into a multi-instrumental engaging duet, their spirited renditions of Carter Family classics, ballads, hillbilly blue, minstrel ditties and fiddle tunes are sure-fire crowd pleasers.

Join the NHSO as we partner with Read to Grow by bringing a donation of a new or gently used children's book to help build literacy for youngsters across the state.

Tickets to this exciting event are $15 (adults), $12 (seniors) and $5 (children). To purchase tickets contact the NHSO Box Office at (203) 865-0831, ext. 10 or visit newhavensymphony.org.

EVENT:  National Theatre of London: Nation
DATE: Jan 30
TIME:  2 PM
PRICE: $28
WHAT: National Theatre of London Live Broadcast Presents: Nation! Based on a novel by Terry Pratchett, adapted to the stage by Mark Ravenhill
A parallel world, 1860. Two teenagers thrown together by a tsunami that has destroyed Mau's village and left Daphne shipwrecked on his South Pacific island, thousands of miles from home. One wears next to nothing, the other a long white dress; neither speaks the other's language; somehow they must learn to survive. As starving refugees gather, Daphne delivers a baby, milks a pig, brews beer and does battle with a mutineer. Mau fights cannibal Raiders, discovers the world is round and questions the reality of his tribe's fiercely patriarchal gods. Together they come of age, overseen by a foul-mouthed parrot, as they discard old doctrine to forge a new Nation.

EVENT: Musician Jonathan Edwards
DATE: Jan 30
TIME: 8 PM
PRICE:$37.50
WHAT: Perhaps best known for the 1971 song, "Sunshine", Jonathan Edwards is a veteran performer who is neither grizzled nor nostalgic. His four decades have carried him from Nashville to the Netherlands, from film scores to hosting a PBS special. But he's always come back to the stage and kept himself relevant and vital as ever. Warm as summer sunshine, real as the truth, as intimate as a long overdue visit between old friends ...a Jonathan Edwards concert will be just that at The Kate. If you're not one of his legion of fans, you soon will be.

EVENT: Small Town Concert Series: Joe Bouchard's Acoustic Jukebox

DATE: Feb 05

TIME: 8 PM

PRICE: $25

WHAT: Small Town Concerts Present: Joe Bouchard's Acoustic Jukebox

What do rock stars do after they "retire" from a multi-million record selling group, like Blue Oyster Cult? If you're Joe Bouchard, a "consummate crafter of grown-up pop" (Martin Popoff, Guitar World magazine), you keep writing, do a little teaching, and keep rocking! The electric bassplayer and songwriter of BOC (and the musically educated one), Joe Bouchard, lives in Connecticut and keeps his chops up, playing guitar and singing all over the state, the country, and the world! Nowadays, Joe can rock with other great players in an unplugged style, such as the Acoustic Jukebox. Acoustic Jukebox is Joe's latest group that is dedicated playing the classic songs of Blue Oyster Cult, some of Joe's newer songs and other rock classics with an acoustic "unplugged"style.

EVENT: Met In HD: Simon Boccanegra

DATE: Feb 06

TIME: 1 PM

PRICE: $28

WHAT:  The Met In HD: Four decades into a legendary Met career, tenor Plácido Domingo makes history singing the title role in Verdi's gripping political thriller, which is written for a baritone.

Recently retired, Patricia Barone had been a teacher, a writer, an art historian - in short, a life long student. Finally, she has come out to play and that's why she paints.

She has been fortunate to study painting under the direction of two great teachers: Terry Oakes Bourret and Noel Belton. She has also attended workshops at the Lyme Art Association and the Guilford Art Center.  Patricia received her BA at SCSU , New Haven, Ct.: Summa cum laude, awarded the English Prize.  She then attended and received her MA atWesleyan University, Middletown in 19th and 20th century European Art History and Literature as well as Doctoral Studies at New York University: American Art History, Literature and Intellectual History - 19th and 20th century.  she was docent at Yale Center for British Art Docent for10 years of training and preparing for 2-3 major exhibitions each year.  Currently, Patricia is an artist member and newly elected to be on the Board of Directors of the Madison Art Society.

There have been many art masters who have influenced her approach to painting: Constable, Turner, Manet, Degas, J. S. Sargent, Alfred Sisley, Cezanne and Willard Metcalf.  However, she said that her greatest appreciation is for her painting friends - companions and inspiration along this intriguing path that artists tread

SENSATIONAL SEASON

GOODSPEED MUSICALS ANNOUNCES 2010 SEASON AT THE HISTORIC GOODSPEED OPERA HOUSE
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

CARNIVAL!

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING

Goodspeed Musicals, under the leadership of Michael P. Price, is thrilled to announce the 2010 musical season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn.  The 47th season includes three fantastic musicals that are sure to delight theatregoers:  the fun and frolicking Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun will run from April 16 - June 27; the second production, Carnival!  featuring such memorable classics as "Love Makes the World Go 'Round," will run from July 9 - September 18; and the Tony Award-winning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying will run from September 24 - November 28.

From the team that brought you Camelot, the 2010 season opener will be Annie Get Your Gun, with Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin and Book by Herbert Fields and Dorothy Fields as revised by Peter Stone.  Saddle up for a Wild West adventure! Ride along with Annie Oakley, a backwoods gal with a sure-shot and quick wit, as she challenges dashing marksman Frank Butler to be the star of Buffalo Bill's traveling show.  Sparks fly faster than bullets as the competition and romance heat up.  Featuring some of Broadway's greatest songs:  "There's No Business Like Show Business,"  "Anything You Can Do," " I Got The Sun In The Morning," and "You Can't Get A Man With A Gun."  This Irving Berlin classic hits the bulls-eye every time!

Goodspeed's Annie Get Your Gun  will be directed by Rob Ruggiero of Goodspeed's 1776, Big River  and last summer's legendary Camelot. Rob Ruggiero has directed numerous productions during his tenure as Associate Artistic Director of Hartford's TheaterWorks and recently brought his William Finn revue Make Me A Song to New World Stages in New York City.  His current production of Looped, starring Valerie Harper, is scheduled to open on Broadway this spring. The choreographer will be Noah Racey, who thrilled Goodspeed audiences as Charley Wykeham in Where's Charley? . Mr. Racey served as Associate Choreographer of the Broadway sensation Thoroughly Modern Mille. Other Broadway credits include Curtains, Never Gonna Dance, and Follies. Annie Get Your Gun will be sponsored by Webster Bank and Comcast.

Audiences will be charmed by the wonderful story of Lili. Carnival! has Music and Lyrics by Bob Merrill and Book by Michael Stewart, with revisions by Francine Pascal.

The magical and heart-warming tale of a naïve young woman who eagerly joins a traveling circus.  Surrounded by a riot of acrobats and jugglers, music makers and clowns, she is dazzled at first by the troupe's manipulative magician.  In the end she finds happiness with a disillusioned puppeteer who can only express himself through his delightful puppets.  Based on the film "Lili" and with songs like "Love Makes the World Go Round" and "Her Face," Carnival! casts a romantic spell over the entire audience.

Carnival!  will be directed by Darko Tresnjak, who directed Goodspeed Musicals' Amour and A Little Night Music. Carnival!  will be choreographed by Peggy Hickey, whose previous Goodspeed Musicals credits include Brigadoon, King of Hearts, Amour, On The Twentieth Century, and A Little Night Music. Carnival! will be sponsored by Mohegan Sun.

Climb the corporate ladder of laughs in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, with Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser and Book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert, based on Sheperd Mead's 1952 book of the same name.

In this hysterical satire of American industry, an ambitious window-washer uses a bit of charm, a lot of flattery and a little self-help manual called How to Succeed... to zoom up from mail room clerk to executive suite boss.  A triumph of musical theatre with a happy and witty score that includes ""The Company Way," "I Believe in You" and "Brotherhood of Man."  Winner of 7 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The Director and Choreographer for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying  have yet to be announced. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying  will be sponsored by Liberty Bank and Connecticut Light & Power.

Advance season subscriptions are now on sale through the Box Office (860.873.8668), open seven days a week, or on-line at www.goodspeed.org.  Subscription prices range from $82.50 - $210 at the Goodspeed Opera House for one person, all three shows.  Single tickets go on public sale beginning February 21, 2010.

Curtain times are Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (with select performances at 2:00 p.m.), Friday at 8:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (with select performances at 6:30 p.m.).

Dedicated to the preservation and advancement of musical theatre, Goodspeed Musicals produces three musicals each season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn., and additional productions at The Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, Conn., which was opened in 1984 for the development of new musicals.  The only regional theatre to receive two Tony Awards (for outstanding achievement), Goodspeed also maintains The Scherer Library of Musical Theatre and The Max Showalter Center for Education in the Musical Theater.  Goodspeed gratefully acknowledges the support of Comcast, Connecticut Light and Power, Liberty Bank, Mohegan Sun, Webster Bank, and support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism.

Wesleyan Center for the Arts

Lecture:  The Supernatural Writings of Ueda Akinari

February 4    4:30pm

Miri Nakamura, Assistant Professor of Asian Languages and Literatures, Wesleyan University

Ueda Akinari (1734-1809) was a writer, poet, a medical doctor, and a scholar of the nativist movement in Edo period Japan.  One of his most famous works, Tales of Moonlight and Rain (1776) is often seen as one of Japan's greatest works of prose fiction that surrounds the theme of the supernatural.  Ghosts, demons, snake women, and bodily transformations-these figures inspired later writers of fantastic fiction and continue to haunt the imagination of contemporary writers as well.  This talk focuses on the use of the supernatural in both Tales of Moonlight and Rain and his later collection  Tales of the Spring Rain (1806) to discuss how Akinari's seemingly "non-realistic" or "fictional" are tied to his philosophy on nativism-a proto-nationalist movement that aimed to seek a "Japan" untainted by foreign (mainly Chinese) influences.

A highlight of the Chester Winter Carnivale, it's a bargain hunter's delight

Open to the public Sunday, February 21, 2010

On Sunday, February 21, Goodspeed Musicals, the only two time Tony Award winning theatre in the country, will hold its Theatre Treasures Tag Sale in the lobby of The Norma Terris Theatre. Doors open 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Norma Terris Theatre is located at 33 North Main St, Chester, Connecticut.

The Theatre Treasures Tag Sale will live up to its name with a wide variety of one-of-a-kind items for sale, including decorative theatrical pieces from many of Goodspeed Musicals' past productions. This year's tag sale will feature unique props, original set pieces and signs, furniture, books, china and other whimsical and wonderful specialty items, each with its own inimitable history.

If you're looking for something truly special be sure to check out some of the distinctive collectables and vintage pieces that have been featured on Goodspeed's stage throughout the years. Personal checks, cash and credit cards will be accepted, making it easy for you to buy your own piece of theatrical history. Proceeds go to support Goodspeed Musicals' Education Program.

This year, the Theatre Treasures Tag Sale takes place at the same time as the Chester Winter Carnivale. The 2010 Chester Winter Carnivale will feature an Ice Carving Competition, Tractor Parade, Chilly Chili Cook Off, concessions, and all kinds of family friendly entertainment.  Area businesses will also host their own events and several art exhibits are expected to make their debut.

Dedicated to the preservation and advancement of musical theatre, Goodspeed Musicals produces three musicals each season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn., and additional musicals at The Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, Conn., which was opened in 1984 for the development of new musicals. The only regional theatre to receive two Tony Awards (for outstanding achievement), Goodspeed also maintains The Scherer Library of Musical Theatre and The Max Showalter Center for Education in the Musical Theater.

With support from Neighborhood Music School, we are continuing our concert series this fall at the Unitarian Society hall at 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, CT, 06517. This is a gorgeous facility, with plenty of space, and free on site parking for 170 cars. While not as "historic" as The Little Theater, the sound is great, the seats comfortable and the toilets flush!! The music is still top notch!

As usual, we take your suggestions to heart, and try and bring in artists that you really want to see. Right now we are very close to confirming at least two shows.... Performers we have been talking with include The Grascals, Chris Thile and Punch Brothers, Mountain Heart, Tim O'Brien with Bryan Sutton, Tony Rice and David Grisman, David Bromberg and Jorma Kaukonen, and Richard Thompson. We aim high, but now we have a track record and a larger hall, so any of these are possible.

We will keep you informed by email as shows are finalized, and also check our website http://www.guitartownct.com/.  We hope to see you this fall as we continue to bring the very best in acoustic music to Connecticut.

Everything created to be alive in the universe shares rhythm, shape, proportion and structural relationships. The Greeks looked to the Gods for pure form as they set the standards for human perception of beauty. In this class we will draw and paint plant forms to study pure form and develop a critical eye for the world in which we live. Students must bring plants and art supplies for the workshop.
