 Jazz'd 4 Life
Haiti Earthquake Relief
Among the many fine organizations committed to relief for Haiti, Jazz'd 4
Life has a long time partnership with BEMHaiti (bemhaiti.org) I know these people will get direct
help to those who come to them from Port-au-Prince. There will be an influx of
people coming to live outside of P-a-P because it will take months even years
for that city to recover. There is an infrastructure of support and care
already in place through the BEM Network.
We have food donation stations setup in Wallingford
(non-perishables,nonliquids, rice , beans and things that don't need to be
cooked or need water, like granola bars, protein bars, etc)
The governor is working on getting a large shipping container for BEM Haiti
to ship once foods have been collected..
If people are interested in a drop-off address , it's Maplewood Storage
Unit, 929
North Main St Extension (the road
behind the movie theater) in
Wallingford.
Thanks for your help. It feels good to do a little something when you see
all this crazy suffering. Pray for the Peace to be maintained there.
|
We thank you for your concern, and your prayers, and will keep you updated.
Many Blessings,
Arne and Catherine Yaghsizian
PS~ If you would like to donate to Jazzed 4 Life, we will
make sure your money gets to Haiti (www.jazzed4life.org)

KEHLER LIDDELL GALLERY
JANUARY 30 - FEBRUARY 27
COALESCENCE
Klingberg Family Centers and Soroptimist International of Greater New Haven announced today a month-long benefit exhibition, "Coalescence," opening January 30 at the Kehler Liddell Gallery in Westville Village, New Haven.
"Coalescence" will feature nature-inspired watercolors by Belgian artist Nicole van Axx and sculpture and other artwork by local artists including Susan Clinard. The exhibit will culminate in a Closing Reception event on February 27, at 4 p.m. This event will provide an entertaining evening of art, live music, food and wine and will offer collectors a final opportunity to purchase extraordinary art at a range of affordable prices while supporting the efforts of the two nonprofit groups in their missions to help women, children and families in need. This very special, one-night-only event features an exciting array of artwork inspired by nature and women's circumstances. In addition to an exhibit of an eclectically curated mix of artwork, guests will be entertained by the musical beat of the Raymond Hill School African Drumming Troupe and enjoy delicious offerings of Lena's Café and our wine bar. This event is a wonderful opportunity for both beginning and seasoned collectors to purchase beautiful and inspired artwork and for members of the community to support the work of these community service organizations. Admission is $35 per person for the Closing Reception event; viewing/cocktail hour will begin at 4 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling Julie-Ann Toalston at (860) 832-5524 or e-mailing julieannt@klingberg.com. The exhibit is on view and available beginning January 30 with no gallery admission charge. The gallery will also feature a "Giving Wall" that benefits the performing and fine art programs of Klingberg Family Centers and Soroptimist community projects. For more information, visit www.KlingbergNews.org. Other highlights of the exhibition include two additional events at the gallery: an Opening Reception on January 31 from 3-6 p.m. and "Women Helping Women," a recruitment event for Soroptimist International of Greater New Haven, on February 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. The "Women Helping Women" event will offer the opportunity to learn more about joining an international network of dynamic women who serve their communities both locally and globally through membership in Soroptimist International. About Soroptimist International: Soroptimist is an international volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. The name, Soroptimist, means "best for women," and that's what the organization strives to achieve. Locally, the Greater New Haven club offers expertise, support and friendship to refugee women and girls by partnering with the New Haven-based non-profit IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services). A parallel world, 1860. Two teenagers thrown together by a tsunami that has
destroyed Mau's village and left Daphne shipwrecked on his South Pacific
island, thousands of miles from home. One wears next to nothing, the other a
long white dress; neither speaks the other's language; somehow they must learn
to survive. As starving refugees gather, Daphne delivers a baby, milks a pig,
brews beer and does battle with a mutineer. Mau fights cannibal Raiders,
discovers the world is round and questions the reality of his tribe's fiercely
patriarchal gods. Together they come of age, overseen by a foul-mouthed parrot,
as they discard old doctrine to forge a new Nation.

sunshine, real as the truth, as intimate as a long overdue visit between old

"You Can't Get A Man With A Gun." This Irving Berlin classic hits the
bulls-eye every time!
Goodspeed's
Annie Get Your Gun will be directed by Rob Ruggiero of Goodspeed's 1776,
Big River and last summer's legendary Camelot. Rob Ruggiero has directed
numerous productions during his tenure as Associate Artistic Director of
Hartford's TheaterWorks and recently brought his William Finn revue Make Me A
Song to New World Stages in New York City. His current production of Looped,
starring Valerie Harper, is scheduled to open on Broadway this spring. The
choreographer will be Noah Racey, who thrilled Goodspeed audiences as Charley
Wykeham in Where's Charley? . Mr. Racey served as Associate Choreographer of
the Broadway sensation Thoroughly Modern Mille. Other Broadway credits include Curtains,
Never Gonna Dance, and Follies. Annie Get Your Gun will be sponsored by Webster
Bank and Comcast.
Audiences
will be charmed by the wonderful story of Lili. Carnival! has Music and Lyrics
by Bob Merrill and Book by Michael Stewart, with revisions by Francine Pascal.
The magical
and heart-warming tale of a naïve young woman who eagerly joins a traveling
circus. Surrounded by a riot of acrobats and jugglers, music makers and
clowns, she is dazzled at first by the troupe's manipulative magician. In
the end she finds happiness with a disillusioned puppeteer who can only express
himself through his delightful puppets. Based on the film "Lili" and with
songs like "Love Makes the World Go Round" and "Her Face," Carnival! casts a
romantic spell over the entire audience.
Carnival!
will be directed by Darko Tresnjak, who directed Goodspeed Musicals' Amour
and A Little Night Music. Carnival! will be choreographed by Peggy
Hickey, whose previous Goodspeed Musicals credits include Brigadoon, King of
Hearts, Amour, On The Twentieth Century, and A Little Night Music. Carnival! will
be sponsored by Mohegan Sun.
Climb
the corporate ladder of laughs in How to Succeed in Business Without Really
Trying, with Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser and Book by Abe Burrows, Jack
Weinstock and Willie Gilbert, based on Sheperd Mead's 1952 book of the same
name.
In this
hysterical satire of American industry, an ambitious window-washer uses a bit
of charm, a lot of flattery and a little self-help manual called How to
Succeed... to zoom up from mail room clerk to executive suite boss. A
triumph of musical theatre with a happy and witty score that includes ""The
Company Way," "I Believe in You" and "Brotherhood of Man." Winner of 7
Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The
Director and Choreographer for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
have yet to be announced. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
will be sponsored by Liberty Bank and Connecticut Light & Power.
Advance
season subscriptions are now on sale through the Box Office (860.873.8668),
open seven days a week, or on-line at www.goodspeed.org. Subscription

all three shows. Single tickets go on public sale beginning February 21,
2010.

p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (with select performances at 6:30 p.m.).
Dedicated
to the preservation and advancement of musical theatre, Goodspeed Musicals
produces three musicals each season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East
Haddam, Conn., and additional productions at The Norma Terris Theatre in
Chester, Conn., which was opened in 1984 for the development of new musicals.
The only regional theatre to receive two Tony Awards (for outstanding
achievement), Goodspeed also maintains The Scherer Library of Musical Theatre
and The Max Showalter Center for Education in the Musical Theater. Goodspeed
gratefully acknowledges the support of Comcast, Connecticut Light and Power,

WESLEYAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS FEBRUARY 4 4:30PM LECTURE: THE SUPERNATURAL WRITINGS OF UEDA AKINARI |
|
Wesleyan Center for the Arts
Lecture: The Supernatural Writings of Ueda Akinari February 4 4:30pm
Miri Nakamura, Assistant Professor of
Asian Languages and Literatures, Wesleyan University
Ueda Akinari
(1734-1809) was a writer, poet, a medical doctor, and a scholar of the nativist
movement in Edo period Japan. One of his
most famous works, Tales of Moonlight and Rain (1776) is often seen as one of
Japan's greatest works of prose fiction that surrounds the theme of the
supernatural. Ghosts, demons, snake
women, and bodily transformations-these figures inspired later writers of
fantastic fiction and continue to haunt the imagination of contemporary writers
as well. This talk focuses on the use of
the supernatural in both Tales of Moonlight and Rain and his later
collection Tales of the Spring Rain
(1806) to discuss how Akinari's seemingly "non-realistic" or "fictional" are
tied to his philosophy on nativism-a proto-nationalist movement that aimed to
seek a "Japan" untainted by foreign (mainly Chinese) influences.

GUITARTOWNCT PRODUCTIONS |
|
With support from Neighborhood Music School, we are continuing our concert series
this fall at the Unitarian Society hall at 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, CT,
06517. This is a gorgeous facility, with plenty of space, and free on site
parking for 170 cars. While not as "historic" as The Little Theater, the sound
is great, the seats comfortable and the toilets flush!! The music is still top
notch!
As usual, we take your suggestions to heart, and try and bring in
artists that you really want to see. Right now we are very close to confirming
at least two shows.... Performers we have been talking with include The
Grascals, Chris Thile and Punch Brothers, Mountain Heart, Tim O'Brien with Bryan
Sutton, Tony Rice and David Grisman, David Bromberg and Jorma Kaukonen, and
Richard Thompson. We aim high, but now we have a track record and a larger hall,
so any of these are possible.
We will keep you informed by email as shows are finalized, and also
check our website http://www.guitartownct.com/. We hope
to see you this fall as we continue to bring the very best in acoustic music to
Connecticut.

Everything created to be alive in the universe shares rhythm, shape,

draw and paint plant forms to study pure form and develop a critical eye for the
world in which we live. Students must bring plants and art supplies for the
