Shoreline's Top Talent: Scholarships in the Arts
Shoreline's Top Talent Scholarships in the Arts returns for its much anticipated 29th Showcase on Sunday, May 2nd, 2 - 4pm at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. Produced and hosted by the Shoreline Arts Alliance, Shoreline's Top Talent is the only scholarship competiton in Conecticut to recognize the exceptional talent of high school juniors and seniors residing in the Shoreline region and bestow awards of $1,000 each in creative writing, dance, instrumental music, vocal music, theatre and visual arts. The Shoreline's Top Talent Showcase is open to the public and free to attend.
Competitiors are judged on creativity, composition, technical skill, and presentation by dedicated volunteer arts professionals. The competition is narrowed down by the judges to two finalists in each arts discipline. Finalists will perform and present their talent at the Shoreline's Top Talent Showcase on May 2nd at The Kate after which scholarshp recipient results are announced and presented. The judges also bestow special recognition non-cash awards of professional mentoring sessions.
A unique addition to the 2010 competition includes a $250 prize for the best Shoreline's Top Talent logo created for and presented at the Showcase. Under the direction of art teacher Chris LeQuire, students from Valley Regional High School have generously created logos to enhance the visual impact of the Showcase. Audience members will cast their ballots for the best logo design at the end of the Showcase. For a list of finalists and our generous sponsors click here. New Voices in Children's Literature: Tassy Walden Awards
Celebrates 10 Years
Children's books provide a forum to learn about people and places throughout the world by offering an understanding of humanity, inspiring creativity, and giving access to new ideas and concepts.
The Shoreline ARts Alliance recognizes the best in children's books with the New Voices in Children's Literature: Tassy Walden awards. An annual juried competition, the Tassy's were established in 2001 to encourage and nurture the creation and p ublication of exceptional quality books for children by unpublished Connecticut writers and illustrators. An award of $250 is presented to the winners in each of five children's book categories as judged by publishing industry experts.
On Wednesday, May 19 the Shoreline Arts Alliance will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the New Voices in Children's Literature competition and bestow the 2010 awards at the James Blackstone Memorial Library at 7pm. Beginning at 6:30pm there will be a book sale and author/illustrator signing of published Tassy award winners and finalists. The event is open to the public and free to attend.
